Draft Daily: Lessons learned from PFF Draft Pass

The PFF Draft Daily will hit on a number of NFL Draft-related topics including recent news, scouting reports, PFF draft takes, and much more on a daily basis.

Nuggets from PFF Draft Pass

If you’ve yet to grab your PFF Draft Pass, what are you waiting for? The community is growing, and having access to the same detailed analysis as NFL general managers and other NFL draft gurus puts you right in the center of the action. Just surfing through Draft Pass on a daily basis (either the online component or the downloadable PDF) brings new nuggets to life, so I’ve decided to share a few here.

Michigan edge defender Taco Charlton had the highest pass-rush productivity on pressures that made it to the quarterback in less than 2.5 seconds

There are numerous ways to break down pass-rush production and time to the quarterback is a valuable one. Charlton’s advanced stat breakdown shows he has the best pass-rush productivity in the draft class on pressures getting to the quarterback in less than 2.5 seconds. That’s valuable information, and another notch in the belt for Charlton when looking to separate him within a deep class of edge defenders.

Ole Miss TE Evan Engram led draft class tight ends in yards/route, deep pass receptions, slot receptions and slot yards

Engram may be more wide receiver than tight end at the next level and his advanced stat breakdown sums it up well. He moved around in Ole Miss’ offense and did damage to all parts of the field. Expect to see plenty of him in the slot at the next level and it will be his blocking that will determine whether he can force defensive coordinators to respect him enough in the run game to dictate favorable matchups on offense.

Toledo RB Kareem Hunt was not taken down upon first contact on 42.4 percent of his runs, second-best in the draft class

With the highest production grade among running backs last season, Hunt is one of the better backs in the class and the one word that comes to mind when watching him is “balance.” He maintains his balance extremely well through contact, as evidenced by his rarely going down when the defense first gets to him. Hunt may get lost in a deep running back class at times, but he’s sitting at No. 5 in our current overall running back rankings.

Scouting report for Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer

An up-and-down season has led to views that are all over the place for Kizer, though there’s no denying that his natural ability is as good as it gets in the class. The question is about consistency, both week-to-week and within games, and whether Kizer can improve his accuracy enough to take advantage of a strong arm and a feel for the pocket that looks exceptional in short spurts. Here’s more on Kizer:
