Creative Eagles coaches could covet Christian McCaffrey

  • Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey’s skill as a receiver sets him apart from the rest of the running back class — he averaged 1.66 yards per route run last season, ranking ninth among running backs.
  • McCaffrey forced 21 missed tackles as a receiver in his junior year — only three running backs in this draft class accumulated more after receptions.
  • His route-running is one feature of his game that sets him apart, particularly the ability to split wide and create mismatches.
  • Throughout his coaching career, Doug Pederson has shown an emphasis on backs who can work in space, using Jamaal Charles and Darren Sproles extensively on the perimeter.
  • Andy Reid, Pederson’s mentor, built his passing game around receiving back Brian Westbrook.

Fantasy Slant: The fit would be an optimal one for McCaffrey’s post-draft fantasy stock. Westbrook was an elite fantasy option from 2006-2008 in Reid’s offense and Charles finished as the No. 1 fantasy running back in 2013. Don’t forget that Brian Dawkins was one of his coaches in high school and became an exec with the Eagles, so he’ll have a lot of insight on McCaffrey. Would not be a surprise to see the Eagles go after him
