Colts have options in drafting RB Frank Gore’s future replacement

One of arguably the best running backs of the past decade has been on the decline in recent seasons, and the Colts might need a new workhorse in the backfield soon.

• Frank Gore’s overall grade has dropped every year since 2012 (80.1, 74.3, 72.2, 71.6, and 70.9, respectively).

• Only two backs were on the field for more than 55 pass-blocking snaps and recorded a pass-block efficiency rating of less than 90.0 last season: Gore (87.7) and Buffalo's LeSean McCoy (88.7).

• Gore recorded the worst elusive rating (15.7) of any back in the NFL with more than 100 carries in 2016.

• There are several RBs in this year’s draft that had an excellent elusive rating in 2016 that the Colts could target, such as FSU’s Dalvin Cook (129.4, second-best mark in the nation), USF’s Marlon Mack (93.4), and UNC’s Elijah Hood (117.0).

Fantasy Slant: Despite finishing as a top-15 fantasy running back in each of the last two years, Gore has averaged under 4.00 yards per carry over that span. He also posted his second-lowest yards after contact (2.07) and was under 0.40 percent in rushing touchdowns-to-yards rate in 2016. It's tough to justify investing a fantasy pick on Gore's low fantasy ceiling this year.
