Cardinals go defense in first round, take Haason Reddick

  • The Arizona Cardinals added to their linebacker group in the NFL draft, selecting Temple product Haason Reddick at 13th overall.
  • Reddick was one of the most versatile defensive players in college football as he rushed the passer almost the same amount of times from the left side (127) and the right side (115) and also played 95 snaps in coverage.
  • He is expected to play mostly as an off-line linebacker in Arizona’s defense, where he will be asked to dropback into coverage more often, which he showed he is capable of. Reddick allowed a passer rating of just 33.6 on 21 targets, the lowest for any 3-4 outside linebacker who was targeted more than five times.
  • Reddick can be among the better blitzing linebackers in the league due to his experience as a pass-rusher. He ranked third in the nation in pass-rushing productivity rating (20.1) among 3-4 outside linebackers when rushing from the left. He recorded 9 sacks, 3 hits, and 19 hurries on 127 pass-rushing snaps from the left.
  • He flashed ability against the run too, as he ranked 16th among 3-4 outside linebackers in run-stop percentage with 8.7 percent, making a stop on 25 of 289 run snaps.
  • Reddick needs to improve on his tackling, especially when playing in an off-line linebacker position since he missed the third-most tackles among 3-4 outside linebackers in 2016 with 15.
