Dolphins Sign Cortland Finnegan

courtland_finnegan2The Dolphins signed CB Cortland Finnegan to a two-year deal worth $11 million. What’s perhaps most impressive about this contract is the fact that Finnegan acted as his own agent.

Finnegan, who turned 30 in February, played the last two seasons in St. Louis after spending his first six years as a pro with the Titans. A fiery competitor, Finnegan produced strong numbers in Tennessee and appeared to be emerging as one of the league’s top cover men after grading out as PFF’s No. 2 corner behind only Darrelle Revis in 2011.

The following season, he joined the Rams on a five-year, $50 million deal and was a general disappointment. Last season, he ranked as the No. 109 corner out of 110 qualifying players despite only playing in seven games.

From the standpoint of the Dolphins, signing Finnegan is a risky roll of the dice. While he certainly was once one of the league’s best at the position, it appears as though Father Time has had his way with Finnegan. His declining play over the past two seasons would suggest a revival is a long shot.

In Tennessee, Finnegan was one of the rare corners to have consistent high-floor fantasy value. While this carried over to his first season in St. Louis, last year was a disaster.

However, if Finnegan ends up making the team and is named a starter, he’ll line up opposite Brent Grimes and should see a lot of targets coming his way. With this being the case, Finnegan will retain at least marginal fantasy value as a matchup play in IDP leagues.
