Dolphins: Hartline gone after 2014 dip

PFF-headlinesTwo years after signing a five-year, $31 million contract, Brian Hartline has been released by Miami Dolphins following a lackluster campaign that saw him rank among the least productive wide receivers in the league. In spite of the emergence of second-round pick Jarvis Landry, Hartline didn’t see a big drop in playing time, but his production and performances were way down on his 1,000-yard campaigns from 2012 and 2013.

Failing to top 500 yards for the season, only six receivers who ran at least 200 routes last year gained fewer yards per route run than Hartline’s 0.99 mark. Held without a catch three times and only gaining more than 50 yards in a game three times all season, his decline from the remarkable consistency we saw before was dramatic.

Teams on the hunt for a safe pair of hands at receiver will be looking towards Hartline in the hope that he can rediscover his previous form. In contrast to his 2014 showing, Hartline finished inside the league’s Top 20 in Yards per Route Run in 2012 (2.08) and just outside the Top 40 in 2013 (1.63), grading inside the league’s Top 30 for receiving grade both seasons. The Dolphins will press on without Hartline, looking to Landry to expand on his impressive rookie season (+3.5 receiving grade) while Hartline will look to rebound quickly in new surroundings.
