Do Stats Lie? – Illuminating Shady’s Issues

Out of 53 running backs who have handled at least 25% of his team’s carries, Pro Football Focus grades have LeSean McCoy tied for 49th at -6.7. McCoy is tied with his complete inverse, Toby Gerhart.

Through five games, McCoy has tallied 94 carries for 273 yards, a 2.9 yards per carry average. The primary Philadelphia Eagles running back also only has one touchdown. Toss in 14 receptions for 69 yards and no receiving touchdowns and we have … not a whole lot of fantasy value. That’s a bit of a problem if you’re one of the people who took Shady with their top draft pick this year.

McCoy only grades better than Bobby Rainey, Donald Brown, and Knile Davis in PFF’s grading system. A lot of fans will attribute the former Pitt star’s slow start to a decimated offensive line. Some pundits have said that Darren Sproles’ presence has diminished the role of McCoy to a point where he’s being pigeonholed to situations where teams can target McCoy when he’s on the field.
