Colts: Offensive line concerns

PFF-headlinesIn a season where most things have gone their way, the Colts must have concerns about the performance of the right-side of the offensive line.  While the line as a whole ranks thirteenth with an 80.0 Pass Blocking Efficiency (PBE), neither right tackle Gosder Cherilus (-8.9), center Jonotthan Harrison (-8.8), nor right guard Hugh Thornton (-7.3) have graded well in pass protection. The form of Cherilus is a particular concern since he is exposed on the edge of the line. That could be seen on the first snap of last week’s game when Redskins’ outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan immediately beat Cherilus off the edge for a strip-sack. Getting embarrassed by Kerrigan (fourth-best Pass Rushing Productivity rating among 3-4 OLBs) happens to plenty of tackles, but Cherilus has struggled all season.

Although Cherilus missed Week 12 with a shoulder injury, he has still allowed five sacks and 12 QB hits, giving Cherilus a 94.1 PBE, which ranks 42nd out of 57 tackles. The Colts signed Cherilus on the back of his career best performance with the Lions in 2012, when he allowed just four sacks and seven QB hits, for a 96.6 PBE, tenth-best among tackles that season. The Colts could do with him returning to that sort of form at the business end of the season.
