Colts: Bjoern Werner's form tails off

PFF-headlinesFive weeks ago I wrote about how Bjoern Werner had started to produce for the Indianapolis Colts. Werner had four sacks and 12 total pressures in a three game stretch, giving him a 12.8 Pass Rushing Productivity (PRP) score, the eighth-best among 3-4 outside linebackers over those three weeks. However in the four games since, that production has evaporated – Werner registered zero sacks, only a single QB knockdown and three hurries. Werner was unable to record any pressure at all against the Jaguars in Week 12, and his PRP score has fallen to 6.3 for the season, 29th out of 31 qualifying 3-4 outside linebackers.

The Colts’ other starting OLB, Erik Walden, also has four sacks, but his 14 QB hits have helped him to a much healthier 10.4 PRP, eighth-best at the position this season. The Colts have also claimed ex-Titan OLB Shaun Phillips (two sacks and fifteen total pressures for a 6.7 PRP score) off waivers, which may see Phillips cut into Werner’s snaps.

It's not all been negative for Werner though, as he has been solid against the run during this quiet spell, accumulating a +2.3 run defense grade over the past four games. Across the season Werner has been credited with 15 stops against the run, for a 7.6 Run Stop Percentage, ninth-best at the position.
