Colts: Backups shine at home

PFF-headlinesIn recent weeks I’ve written about the Colts’ safeties and outside linebackers needing to step up due to starters missing time. This week they answered the call with some truly impressive performances.

Bjoern Werner was thrust into the starting role this year and the results through the first four weeks were generally underwhelming.  Aside from a +1.4 overall day in Jacksonville, the other three games saw him in the red. He turned it around +4.7 overall grade and one of the league's top performances of the week. His day included two sacks, four hurries, and a batted pass thrown in for good measure. Werner's three defensive stops were also tied for second on the team.

Sergio Brown got the start this week after the LaRon Landry suspension and didn’t look back. While he did find his way into the backfield for a sack, it was his work in coverage (+1.1 coverage grade) that stood out.  He was targeted 3 times, allowing just 1 catch for 1 yd.   He also added two more defensive stops in run defense.
