Ohio State-Michigan grades: Elliott, Barrett run over the Wolverines

Ohio State Buckeyes

— After last weeks loss to Michigan State, the Buckeyes' gameplan was to run and then run some more. Ezekiel Elliott (RB, +2.7) and J.T. Barrett (QB, +2.7) had over 350 yards between them on 49 carries as the Wolverines struggled to defend the read option. Barrett and Elliot typically only had one player to beat to record a sizeable gain on most plays.

— Joey Bosa (DE, +8.3) was up to his usual tricks as he dominated the game as a pass rusher. Bosa came into the Week 13 matchup with a pass rushing productivity score of 15.8 (second in the nation). Thanks to nine total pressures on 35 pass rushing snaps, he had a score of 20.7 as the Buckeyes moved him around and no one on the Wolverines' offensive line had an answer for him.

— With Bosa getting all the attention on the Buckeyes defensive line, defensive tackle Adolphus Washington (DT, +3.8) is consistently overlooked, however Washington is having a great season in his own right. Washington is the third-highest defensive interior graded lineman and the second-highest pass-rushing grade as a defensive interior player. Just like Bosa had great success as a pass rusher verses the Wolverines line, so did Washington. With eight total pressures on 44 attempts, Washington was able to get the push up the middle with Bosa coming off the edge.

Michigan Wolverines

— The continuing improvement for Jake Rudock (QB, +5.0) throughout the season has been impressive. At the start of the season Rudock graded out negatively seven of the first eight weeks of the season, but since that point Rudock has found his sweet spot with three positive games in the last four weeks and an overall grade of +17.8 in those last four games. Against the Buckeyes Rudock was able to stand in verses pressure and deliver the ball. Rudock was 7 for 13 for 142 yards when he was pressured — his yards per attempts was higher when pressure arrived than when he had time in the pocket.

— The top target for Rudock was receiver Jehu Chesson (+3.4), Chesson was the only receiver who gave the Buckeyes defense issues in the secondary as he hauled in eight catches on 12 attempts for 111 yards. The Buckeyes used multiple defenders on Chesson and the only player who had some success was Eli Apple (CB, +1.4) — against everyone else Chesson caught all but one target thrown his way.

— The Wolverines' defensive had been the calling card all season long. The defensive line had been able to cause offensive lines issues for opponents in every game this season and then the linebackers where able to take advantage, but against the Buckeyes they were quiet all game long. The Wolverines struggled against the read option with blown assignments or just missed tackles for what would have been minimal gains turned into long runs.
