Countless funds were apportioned in college football DFS to individuals who intelligently paid up at the tight end position for the likes of Clive Walford, Maxx Williams, and Bucky Hodges. Unfortunately, the diminishing value after the top-end salaries was far greater than can currently be found among NFL options. Of course, several options emerged during the season (Hunter HenryEvan Baylis, etc.), alas they vanished as quickly as they appeared.

Pulling players from 128 FBS teams has its advantages, but, within DFS, the volatile tight end position value reached a juncture where netting a point or two was more than you could ask from the available options. College Football Focus graded 743 NCAA tight ends in 2014, yet fewer than 30 actually totaled ≥ 50 targets. Not a single one posted 9 or more TDs or even broke 700 total receiving yards. The ability to identify the difference-making, volume options before the information reaches the populous is a significant advantage.

The widespread usage of spread and Air Raid offenses has been partially responsible for the limited tight end need and implementation. While, even more disappointing for the position, the main limiting factors for the optimal DFS utilization of tight ends during the ’14 season were:

1. Improper Position Classification – i.e. Stephen AndersonThomas Duarte

2. Actual Inclusion – a problem encountered on shortened slates

Several of the better options at the razor-thin position were either not in the FanDuel and/or DraftKings system or were incorrectly classified as running backs or wide receivers. Fingers crossed that both providers research the classifications, consider user feedback, and ultimately correct these mistakes in order to allow the position to be equally analyzed and utilized to gain a further competitive advantage.
