Chargers: Multiple options to replace injured Mathews

PFF-headlinesOvershadowed by an impressive win on Sunday; the San Diego Chargers lost their lead back for the next 4-5 weeks. After being carted off the field, the Chargers learned that Ryan Mathews suffered an MCL sprain in the win over the Seahawks.

Cleverly though, the Chargers had taken precautions this year against Mathews fragility. As a result they are particularly deep at the running back position. Danny Woodhead, who leads the Chargers’ backfield in snaps through the first two weeks (68), will most likely maintain his role as a third down, pass catching back while offseason pickup Donald Brown will look to replace the bulk of Mathews’ carries. Last year, Donald Brown led all backs in our elusive rating rankings with a 73.8 rating; forcing 29 missed tackles on just 129 touches.

We may also see undrafted rookie free agent Branden Oliver receive an increased role in the Chargers’ backfield. Oliver, who has been inactive the first two weeks, played in 81 snaps during the preseason and finished 3rd on our elusive rating rankings for the preseason.

sure hope its woodhead that is given a chance to shine….he has more yards per touch than most of the big name backs in the game!
