CAR-TB Grades: Career day for CB Josh Norman

Here are the top takeaways from Sunday’s Carolina-Tampa Bay game, including the highest-graded players from each team:

Carolina Panthers

— Cornerback Josh Norman (+4.3) set the tone for the Panthers yesterday, picking off Jameis Winston (-6.7) in the first quarter and taking it back to the house for a score. While that play highlighted his performance, he made several other big plays leading to the best grade of his career. Norman was targeted eight times and allowed only two receptions for 31 yards. That, combined with his two interceptions and two pass defenses, led to Winston having a passer rating of 3.6 when targeting Norman on Sunday.

— Carolina made two defensive end acquisitions last week, and while many expected Jared Allen (-4.5), whom the team traded for, to make the big plays and bring the pressure from the edge, it was actually Ryan Delaire (+3.6) who delivered this performance. The undrafted rookie, who was signed off of Washington’s practice squad last week, made several impressive plays in his first NFL game. He recorded two sacks, one quarterback hit, and one quarterback hurry on 28 pass rush snaps leading to a pass rush grade of +2.7, the highest on the team. He also picked up four run stops on only 12 run plays.

— Despite Carolina’s dominant win, it was not one of quarterback Cam Newton’s (-2.0) better games, especially when throwing 10+ yards downfield. Although he completed three of his five passes between the numbers for a passer rating of 104.2, only one pass was completed of his six attempts outside the numbers. This included a late throw to Greg Olsen in the red zone that should have been intercepted by Lavonte David (-0.6), but was dropped.

Top performers:

DT Kawann Short (+4.5)

CB Josh Norman (+4.3)

DE Ryan Delaire (+3.6)

WR Brenton Bersin (+2.6)

RG Trai Turner (+2.6)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

— Both of Tampa Bay’s offensive tackles struggled coming into this game, and while they were still unimpressive in pass protection, they did flash ability in the run game, especially rookie Donovan Smith (+3.7). Right tackle Gosder Cherilus (-3.8) allowed one sack, one quarterback hit, and a team-high five quarterback hurries. Despite his better performance in the run game, he became the lowest-graded member on Tampa Bay’s offensive line. On the other side of the line, Smith did allow one sack, one hit and two hurries, however his run block grade of +4.3 (the highest for anyone on the field yesterday) did save his day and may suggest brighter games ahead.

— Safety Chris Conte (+2.6) had a complete game, as he contributed in all three phases of the defense. Although he missed a tackle, he did record two run stops, which was tied for third on the Buccaneers’ defense. Also, he earned the highest pass coverage grade from Tampa Bay, as he allowed one reception on two targets, and even that went for negative yards. Finally, he picked up a quarterback hurry on his only pass rush snap. It was no surprise that this was Conte’s highest-graded game since his rookie season in 2011.

— Rookie linebacker Kwon Alexander (-3.6) has played every snap for the Buccaneers this season; however it seems that he is still a work in process, as he recorded his third negatively-graded performance in four games. He especially struggles against the run where he graded out at -3.4 yesterday and missed three tackles. He has now missed nine tackles in 2015, which is the most by any Tampa Bay defender. In coverage, he did slightly better, as he allowed one reception on a screen for 10 yards on two targets.

Top performers:

LT Donovan Smith (+3.7)

DE William Gholston (+3.6)

RB Doug Martin (+3.1)

FS Chris Conte (+2.6)

OL Kevin Pamphile (+2.2)

With the Bears and Redskins getting wins this week I guess we won’t have to wonder too long on which team will be at the bottom of the power rankings now.

  • tampa2bucsforever

It is looking more and more like Tampa Bay will receive the number one pick, back to back years. Joey Bosa? Jameis Winston is looking like Jamarcus Winston.

    • NP_Truth

It’s concerning as he does have talent around him. He has just been incredibly bad thus far.

      • Lord Father

I wouldn’t say incredibly bad. I think he is just learning. Andrew luck’s, Cam newton’s and Rg3’s rookie seasons spoiled nfl fans. That’s just not how it normally goes for first year passers.

        • NP_Truth

Each QB mentioned still had their problems, but Winston has just been making throws that he should know not to make. I felt he’d have his struggles, but felt the talent around him would help, but he’s not helped himself thus far.

Guys just calm down he has no running game and the oline is horrid. Mr. Luck has struggled this year too. Its all in the oline we need to draft linemen. Look at ehat the cowboys have done. Joey bosa #1 pick what a fuck#$@ joke. He stinks in college

          • NP_Truth

You proved you don’t watch film or stay in tune with prospects. Bosa stinks? That’s not even worth responding to.

Having a bad OL does not make up for the decisions he’s making with the ball. He has not been good by any stretch of the imagination.

          • JudoPrince

NP_Truth. Is Winston making poor decisions? Yes. Is he making bad throws? Yes. But he’s a rookie on a bad team. Let him make those mistakes. He’s 21 years old!. Give him credit for some of the nice plays he’s making, not just the negative. If Andrew Luck is struggling mightily this year, let the rookie get his struggles in to. Winston will only improve as time goes on.

          • Mac buckets

I see you have football knowledge prince. This Np truth guy must be a fantasy owner and never played a down of real football. Its a process just like riding a bike. You start with training wheels first.

          • Mac buckets

Having a bad line us the biggest piece of the puzzle. What games are you watching. He is making rookie mistakes just as peyton did just as mariotta has this year. Back to Joey Bosa 8 okay games last year does not make you a number 1 pick. There are ten guys on his team better than him. He has not made a play yet yhis year. U must be from ohio. It doesnt help that their schedule is weaker than say a TCU. BOSA IS A BUM.

          • Tim Edell

          • Mac buckets

Yea he does like old garbage. I promise you he wont go any higher than round 3. He is no myles garrett. Uf dline has 4 guys better than him. Not to mention all the guys on bama’s line. Check your facts. Todd mcshay usually changes every week dont rely on what he says guy.

sorry i don’t base my decision off of one site big guy, CEO of a fortune 500 company i’m sure you are….lol. i just come here to state facts Mr. Bosa cock jumper. Bottom line he is hot garbage so you can not and will not change my attitude on him or how weak ohio state is. You should win the championship, you only play 2 games a year. Michigan is your only challenge this year even State sucks. The big ten is horrible we all know it. If Bosa was @ LSU he would’t see the field. We both know it.SEC rules big guy. We both know it. BOSA is a BUM. all will tell on draft day

          • Mac buckets

          • Mac buckets

Look in your nearest mirror it might dawn on you guy. See you tomorrow got better things to do big guy

          • Mac buckets

Guys just calm down he has no running game and the oline is horrid. Mr. Luck has struggled this year too. Its all in the oline we need to draft linemen. Look at ehat the cowboys have done. Joey bosa #1 pick what a fuck#$@ joke. He stinks in college

          • Mac buckets

Matty ice has struggled gor 2 straight years. Now he is ballin. Why? The play action pass smart guys. D. Freeman running for 100 in 3 str8 games. Qb success depends on others this is football not golf. 1 man dont make a team
