Bring in Bradford, send Foles

PFF-headlinesRe-signing Mark Sanchez before free agency was never likely to be the end of the Eagles’ wheeling and dealing at the quarterback position and they made a move no-one saw coming by sending Nick Foles to St. Louis for Sam Bradford. Details of the deal surrounding the two quarterbacks are yet to be confirmed but at the heart of it is a switch of signal-callers who there was plenty of trade buzz around entering the offseason.

Bradford the former No. 1 overall pick has never developed as a top pick should, injuries have held him back but even when he has played his performances on the field have never looked like a quarterback ready to take off if he could just stay healthy. Accuracy was a consistent issue for Bradford before injuries took their toll, with only the two games immediately before he tore his ACL in 2013 offering any hope of a significant upturn in form.

In grading terms, Bradford’s best season came in 2012 when he finished the season with a +6.2 overall grade but the season started even better than that. Through six weeks he was among the Top 10 quarterbacks with a +10.2 passing grade having earned a positive grade in five of his first six starts. From then on he was more inconsistent with three games below -1.0 in the second half of the season, but this is the potential that Chip Kelly will hope to turn into more consistent performances as and when Bradford hits the field for the first time in nearly two years.
