Deep Coverage: Week 11

Mike WallaceAt ProFootballFocus we watch every snap of every game and use that data to gain an edge at fantasy football. One of the ways we use that information is to see which cornerbacks are covering which wide receivers pre-snap based on their positional alignments. This allows us to identify cornerbacks who are asked to shadow receivers around the field rather than just arbitrarily assign them the moniker of being a shutdown corner because of the perceived status and abilities. By studying these defensive tendencies we can also start to make predictions about the on-field matchups for the upcoming slate of games and use that insight to alter our fantasy projections.

Shadow Cornerbacks:

The following cornerbacks playing in Week 11 have been used in a shadow cornerback role three or more times this season. This means they were asked to follow a wide receiver around the field during a game, regardless of where in the formation they lined up.

Shadow – The number of games a cornerback has followed a receiver around the field.
WR1/WR2/WR3 – This is the percentage of snaps that a player has been aligned, pre-snap, with a team’s WR1/WR2/WR3
Other – The percentage of snaps a cornerback was not aligned with a WR1/WR2/WR3
Cov – A player’s PFF coverage grade. Above 5.0 is very good, 4.9 to 1.0 is good, 0.9 to -2.0 is average, -2.1 to -6.0 is poor, and below -6.1 is bad.
TA – The number of passes thrown into a player’s coverage.
% Ct – The percentage of passes completed into a player’s coverage.
Yds – The total yardage allowed.
TD – The number of touchdowns allowed.
