Advanced Targets - Week 9

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (87) leaves Kansas City Chiefs strong safety Donald Washington (27) in his wake as he catches a 19 yard touchdown pass good for a 17-3 third quarter lead during the NFL week 11 football game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, November 21, 2011 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. I occasionally get requests to look at the tight end position. With the trade deadline approaching in most leagues and relatively little upheaval on the wide receiver front, this is a perfect week to do so.

Before we analyze the tight end position and try to find potential inefficiencies in the trade market, let’s do a quick wide receiver rundown. As always, remember that our key metrics are yards per pass route (YPRR), targets per snap (TA/SN), targets per pass route (TA/PR), and pass routes per snap (PR/SN).

The Pass Route Leaders

Oakland’s Denarius Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey led the way with 55 and 52 pass routes respectively. With a weak defense and a nonexistent running game that won’t have Darren McFadden or Mike Goodson in Week 10, don’t be surprised if they're in for a repeat performance. Rod Streater might be a better add than Heyward-Bey, though. His 10 targets led the Raiders.

T.Y. Hilton is this week's waiver wire gem. He gained 102 yards on 11 targets, but it’s the 43 routes that might be the most encouraging. Such ample opportunities suggest his new owners won’t simply be chasing last week’s points.

Donald Jones led the Bills in both targets (8) and routes (41). He’s played on less than 87% of his team’s snaps only once this year and makes a good desperation start against the Patriots.
