5 fantasy matchups to exploit in Week 10

Welcome to the Matchups Machine, which narrows down ideal matchups from around the league on a weekly basis using the tools we have available at PFF, the Las Vegas odds, and insight from yours truly.

PFF has all the tools to break down each individual matchup. Do you want to know how your wide receiver is going to do? Well, if he lines up as a split end on 90 percent of his snaps, we can pinpoint which cornerback he will be matching up with for those snaps. We can also tell you how that cornerback has performed.

Of course, as was the case in the past, this column will become more accurate as the season goes on and we compile more grades for the players and get a feel for the tendencies and overall strengths/weaknesses of the 32 teams.

The goal of this column is to help you with those tricky decisions in year-long leagues, but also to help you narrow down your best options in daily fantasy leagues. You will see a mix of big-name players and fringe starters. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Drew Brees at Redskins

The Redskins entered 2015 with a revamped defense, but injuries have taken their toll on the secondary, and the result is once again one of the NFL’s worst pass defenses. The extent of Washington’s injuries has turned them into an easy weekly target for opposing passing offenses. Drew Brees has thrown for 892 passing yards and 10 touchdowns since premier left tackle Terron Armstead returned from injury in Week 8. Brees’ ownership might be high in daily leagues, but he is an excellent bet to deliver a ROI somewhere in between his Week 8 and 9 outputs.

The Saints have graded out as PFF’s 13th-best pass blocking unit, and pressure should be no issue in this matchup. The Redskins were generating a ton of pressure in the first month, but they have been a lot less effective in recent weeks. Against a beat up Patriots offensive line in Week 9, the Redskins racked up just one quarterback hit and zero sacks to go along with seven quarterback hurries. Top edge rusher Ryan Kerrigan is clearly not himself while trying to play through a fractured hand — he had just one total quarterback pressure on 40 pass rush snaps in Week 9 — he hasn’t produced less pressure on a per snap basis in any game since the first week of the 2014 season.
