49ers release Osgood to make room for Boone

PFF-headlinesSan Francisco announced the activation of former holdout Alex Boone on their official website Saturday. To make room on the 53 man roster they released former special teams ace Kassim Osgood.

A three-time special teams Pro Bowler, Osgood is one of the few players in NFL history to make a name for himself on special teams without being a return man or kick specialist. But his recent grades help explain the 49ers’ decision, showing a steady and noticeable decline the past few years.

He's a four phase guy (plays on all special teams units with the exception of field goals and extra points) and at some stage in his career has excelled in all those areas. He showed well in the first three years of the PFF era (2007-2010) – combining for a +17.7 special teams grade – peaking in that last year with a +6.4 and one of his three Pro Bowl appearances. But it’s been a slow roll downhill since, posting a solid +3.5 for Jacksonville in 2011, +1.5 for Detroit in 2012, and a very rocky campaign last year at -5.0.
