49ers: Add deep threat Smith to WR corps

PFF-headlinesAfter bidding a heartfelt goodbye to Baltimore, Torrey Smith has quickly found a new home in San Francisco with the 49ers. The Ravens’ leading receiver in 2013, Smith suffered a slightly down season in 2014 as Steve Smith took his mantle as Baltimore’s 1,000-yard receiver and Torrey dropped a career high 11 passes, limiting his productivity, especially down the field.

At his best, Smith has been a speedster down the field with glimpses of an all-around game that the 49ers will hope to see more of as they try to build a passing game around Colin Kaepernick. Smith has snagged 15 career touchdowns on deep passes in his four-year career, in the same spell San Francisco wide receivers have combined to score nine so Smith will certainly add an extra dimension down the field if Kaepernick can build a rapport with him and find his range.

Smith also has some big game performances on his résumé having broken out in his second career game with 152 yards and three scores against the Rams in 2011 (a similar performance this season would doubtless go down well in San Francisco) he snagged two scores to help the Ravens past the Broncos on their Super Bowl run in 2012 and snagged multiple scores three times in 2014. The 49ers are not getting the finished article in Smith but they are giving their quarterback a receiver who can stretch the field, something they have lacked in recent seasons.
