The 32 Observations series almost always looks at 32 different players and a different piece of information about each of them. To change things up this week, there will be a tidbit of information about how the team as a unit is doing. After watching the defensive battle on Monday Night Football, there will be a focus on how the team defenses are doing rather than the offense. A quick reminder that defensive statistics are the opposite of offensive in that low yard and touchdown totals are good for the defense.
AFC East
Buffalo Bills: There have been 11 times where the Bills have forced the opponent into a 3rd-and-10+ situation and the opponent has thrown the ball for a first down. That is the most in the league. They have allowed a total of 251 yards on 19 completions on 3rd-and-10+ which is the third most yards in the league.
Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins have been able to get pressure at 50.5% of the time when they blitz which is the fourth-highest rate in the league. They are the only team to not allow a passing touchdown this season when blitzing.
New England Patriots: The Patriots have allowed just 2.6 yards after the catch per catch which is the third-lowest rate in the league.
New York Jets: The Jets have tackled opposing running backs for a loss or no gain on 29.7% of their carries which is the best rate in the league.
AFC North
Baltimore Ravens: When the Ravens don’t blitz, they have been able to sack opposing quarterbacks on 19 of their 189 drop-backs. That is a rate of 10.1% which is the best rate in the league.
Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals have held opponents to 9 yards or fewer on 63.9% of catches which is the best rate in the league.
Cleveland Browns: The Browns have only allowed eight of 38 passes that are thrown 20+ yards in the air to be caught. That is a completion percentage allowed of 21.1% which is the best rate in the league.
Pittsburgh Steelers: When the Steelers don’t blitz, they have sacked the quarterback only four times on 144 drop-backs. That is a rate of 2.8% which is the third-worst rate in the league.
AFC South
Houston Texans: Ignoring kneel downs, the Texans have allowed 158 yards on the 18 times opposing quarterback ended up running with the ball. That is an average of 8.8 yards per carry which is the worst in the league.
Indianapolis Colts: On average, the Colts are contacting the opposing running back after they have already gained 2.7 yards. That is the worst rate in the league.
Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars have gotten pressure on just 29.4% of opposing drop-backs, which is the lowest rate in the league.
Tennessee Titans: When opposing quarterbacks have thrown the ball at least 20 yards in the air against the Titans, they have allowed 14 of 25 attempts to be caught. That is a 56% completion percentage which is the second highest in the league. However the Titans are one of just two teams to not allow a deep touchdown yet.
AFC West
Denver Broncos: The Broncos have allowed touchdowns on eight of 26 opposing red zone carries. That is a rate of a touchdown on 30.8% of carries which is the worst in the league.
Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs have gotten pressure on the opposing quarterback on 45.7% of drop-backs. That is the highest rate in the league.
Oakland Raiders: There have been 114 times in the league this year where a running back has run for 20 or more yards on a carry. The Raiders are the only team not to allow a running back to have that long of a run.
San Diego Chargers: The Chargers have tackled a running back for a loss just four times this year. That is by far the fewest in the league, with the next lowest being 12.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys have allowed 25 pass plays that have gone for 25 or more yards, which is tied for the most in the league.
New York Giants: When opponents have run between the guards, the Giants have given up 125 yards on 52 attempts. That is a 2.4 yards per carry average which is the best in the league.
Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles have yet to have their opponent catch the ball, and then get tackled for a loss. Philadelphia has only tackled opposing receivers for no gain once. That means opposing receivers have been tackled for a loss or no gain on just 0.45% of catches which is the worst rate in the league.
Washington Redskins: Washington has allowed 10.1 yards per attempt on screen passes which is the second worst rate in the league. They have allowed 22 of 24 screen passes to be caught for 242 yards. They have also allowed two screen passes to go for touchdowns which is tied for the most in the league.
NFC North
Chicago Bears: The Bears have missed 42 tackles on run plays which is tied for the most in the league. They average 0.21 missed tackles per run attempt which is the highest in the league. The next highest rate is 0.16.
Detroit Lions: When opponents run outside of the tackles, they have allowed 455 yards on 73 carries for a 6.2 yards per carry average which is the worst in the league.
Green Bay Packers: Of the 149 catches the Packers have allowed this season, 55.0% have gone for 10 or more yards, which is the worst rate in the league.
Minnesota Vikings: Opposing quarterbacks have run the ball 21 times on the Vikings ignoring kneel downs, but they have only allowed 79 yards. That is a 3.8 yards per carry average which is the best in the league.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons: There have been 28 times where opponents have run the ball in the red zone, but the Falcons are one of three teams to only allow one touchdown. That is a rate of a touchdown on 3.6% of carries which is the best rate in the league.
Carolina Panthers: When opponents have run between the guards, the Panthers have given up 266 yards on 44 attempts. That is a 6.0 yards per carry average which is the worst in the league. However when running outside of the tackles, they have allowed 94 yards on 47 carries for a 2.0 yards per carry average which is the best in the league.
New Orleans Saints: When opposing running backs run against the Saints, they gain 12 or more yards on 11.8% of carries. That is the worst rate in the league.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: While the Buccaneers have been average in terms of how frequently they get pressure on opposing quarterbacks, they have been one of the best teams in the league at pressuring the quarterback quickly. Their average time to pressure is 2.3 which is the fourth-best rate in the league.
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals: On average, the Cardinals are contacting the opposing running back after they gain just 1.2 yards, which is the best rate in the league.
St. Louis Rams: The Rams have converted 26.6% of their pressures into sacks which is the highest rate in the league.
San Francisco 49ers: While the 49ers have blitzed opposing quarterbacks 55 times, they only have one sack on blitzes. That is a rate of 1.8% which is the worst in the league.
Seattle Seahawks: There have been 80 times where the Seahawks have blitzed opposing quarterbacks, and on 13 of them they have gotten a sack. That is a rate of 16.3% which is the highest in the league.
