2015 Depth Charts: Oakland Raiders

OAK DCNotes

•  There were signs of promise in his rookie season, but Derek Carr had two very poor games in the last three weeks of the season. How he responds at the start of 2015 is going to be key, but for the time being he looks like the best option the Raiders have, even with his inexperience.

•   How will the offensive line look by the time Week 1 rolls around? Well, it would be a surprise to see anything other than Donald Penn and Gabe Jackson on the left side, but beyond that it’s up in the air. Austin Howard is reportedly back at right tackle, and expected to open camp ahead of Menelik Watson there, while center Kevin Boothe is a candidate to be released.

•  There are times at PFF when we all agree and it’s easy to rank a player. Then there are times like we had when we tried to rank Khalil Mack. We were split on whether or not he was Very Good or Elite, but in the end the debate came down to whether or not an edge defender who had a decent grade as a pass rusher could be Elite, with us leaning to the side of not at this point.

•  Defensive end LaMarr Woodley is reportedly a contender to be released. A solid pass rusher throughout his career in Pittsburgh, his first season in Oakland was relatively disappointing, with just three hits and seven hurries from 128 pass rushing attempts.

Team Needs

Right Guard: There’s a strong case to be made that they have needs at center, right guard and right tackle, but right guard appears to be the biggest one right now. As it stands they’d go into the season with Khalif Barnes likely as the starter, but he struggled at both left guard and right tackle last year, so new additions are needed.

Middle Linebacker: They’ve really found themselves something in Mack, while Sio Moore is at worst a solid linebacker himself. Where they fall down at the position, though, is in the middle. Miles Burris continues to struggle, particularly when blockers get to him at the second level and they wouldn’t have to spend too much to find an upgrade.

Cornerback: D.J. Hayden looked solid in the second half of the 2014 season, but with question marks elsewhere at the position, the Raiders should at least look to bring in another outside corner this offseason.

  • Bob

Wasn’t Penn the 8th best LT or something? Feels like that should warrant dark green.

    • Tyler Ferree

If memeory serves he didn’t grade out very well last year.

    • Chris

Penn was actually the 7th best this past year, including the 5th in pass blocking.

However these charts aren’t based on just 2014, but over the last several years. Penn had some very average at best years in Tampa mixed in with a couple other great ones.

      • Bob

        Gotcha.

  • Pre Bone

Sentences like “center kevin boothe is a candidate to be released” really give me pause in trusting this website. No one cares about Boothe they want to hear about our actual center, Wisniewski.

    • Tyler Ferree

Wisneiwski is a perding FA, so Boothe is penciled in there.

  • Tom Downes

These depth charts provide keen insight to why those team drafting in the top 10-12 each year; plethora of players grading yellow and orange. If a team has a lot of green players but a QB in the red, orange or yellow it means 8-8 or worse.
I would think Oakland’s trend of orange and yellow players would get McKenzie the boot for his body or work.

  • Jaguars28

They’re pretty similar to us, they have some key pieces (especially on defense), but have a lackluster offense.

    • Chris

Hate to say it but I think they’re better off. They’ve got a better defense (more yellow and green compared to the Jags all near all orange). They’ve got great players in Tuck and Smith and a young franchise piece in Mack. They also have Carr, who has already proven more as an NFL QB (to me).

Both teams are almost completely devoid of talent at the offensive skill positions, so there’s a similarity. However if the Raiders sign Cobb and draft White, maybe they’ll finally climb out of the cellar.

      • Jaguars28

You’re right about them being better off (ATM). However, we’re younger on both sides of the ball, have young guys developing (A-Rob, Colvin, Telvin), and have a more talented (not yet better) QB.

I think the D and run game will be better under Del Rio, but I can almost ensure you Carr will bust because Musgrave is a terrible Offensive Coordinator. They’ll be selecting Christian Hackenburg in the 2016 draft.

      • Tim Edell

Not sure I would agree that Antonio Smith and Justin Tuck are great players Chris.

        • Chris

Tuck was a top 10 4-3 DE in 5 of 7 years including as recent as 2013 before joining Oakland. He was nearly top 15 last year.

Smith was a top 10 3-4 DE 2 of the last 3 years before joining Oakland. He has always been a great interior rusher and that was still true last year with the Raiders, where he ranked 3rd in the league.

Those are both great players who had comparative down years in their first years playing with a very talent-poor Oakland team.

          • JIMBO JET

Justin tuck isn’t consistent, he has a couple games a year where he grades ridiculously high, other than those games he he is mostly average. So I would say he is decent not great

          • Jaguars28

Well, Oakland had 22 sacks compared with Jacksonville’s 45, so something’s off here.

          • Tim Edell

They are good players not great- even PFF rates them as good not very good sir.

          • Tim Edell

You might be the only person besides Antonio’s Smith relatives that would consider him a great player.

          • Tim Edell

Your boy Antonio “great player” Smith just got cut- must not be as great as you thought he was huh?

          • Chris

It’s not my fault the Raiders are run by a bunch of degenerates.

Back through 2007 he’s played 5 years at 3-4 DE. He ranked inside the top 20 overall in all 5, and inside the top 11 in 3 of them. He was also top 5 rushing the passer in 4 of those years.

In the 2 years Houston asked him to play 4-3 DE he struggled mightily against the run(#71, 3rd to last, and #61, 5th to last), but still ranked top 20 as a rusher.

In the 1 year Oakland asked him to play 4-3 DT he struggled mightily against the run (#81, dead last) but still ranked 3rd rushing the passer.

This is a guy who, when playing an interior line position (so excluding the 2 4-3 edge rusher years in Houston), has ranked inside the top 5 as a pass rusher in 5 of 6 seasons.

If you’re taking umbrage at my usage of the descriptor ‘great’, that’s your problem. They guy is a productive “good” 3-4 end and consistently ranks top 5 as an interior pass rusher no matter the scheme. He’s overmatched against the run as a tackle and not quick enough to be an edge rusher, but if my team ran a 3-4 I’d love it if they picked him up.

          • Tim Edell

Well a “great” player doesn’t sign for 1 year for 2 million. So I guess genious my umbrage with you calling him a “great” player would be an error on your part!!

          • Chris

They do when they’re 33 going on 34.

      • JIMBO JET

Justin tuck isn’t great he only grades well against the rush, no the most important thing for 4-3 d-ends

      • https://twitter.com/MALACHiOFCOURSE Malachi

cooper over white in the draft i’d think, altho Al davis would agree with you, but he’s gone (RIP). as a broncos fan i’m just hoping J-ville doesn’t screw the pooch like last year and let the best defensive player, leonard williams, fall to oak. to pair with mack & tuck.

        • Riffle,Rod&Fly

Cooper looked soooo quick and smooth in the route running portion of the combine. He changes direction without a flinch.

          • https://twitter.com/MALACHiOFCOURSE Malachi

no doubt, he’s the real deal. maybe his ceiling isn’t as high as the kid, white, or even the dorial green guy but his floor is a risk free solid starter

      • Riffle,Rod&Fly

The last couple years has shown a huge difference between divisional competition as well.

  • Football

This team sucks, just like PFF and their grades.

    • Chris

Oh look, Football decided to show up and fling his poop around the room again.

      • Football

Care to explain the algorithms PFF uses to “grade” players?
Oh wait, it’s all opinion-based bullshit.

        • Tyler Ferree

If you don’t like it then don’t read it, frankly you are nothing but a troll.

        • bobrulz

Just like actual scouting then, right?

    • Graham

Your Steelers got that ass whooped by Ravens bum

  • PetEng

Borland for the Raiders 1st round pick. Who says no?

    • Tyler Ferree

      The niners…

      • PetEng

#4 pick for Borland would be tempting.

        • Tyler Ferree

Considering that one of willis and Bowman will be gone next year (just too expensive to keep both, especially since Borland is cheap) and I’m not sure the Raiders would part with 4 for a Mike anyway.

          • PetEng

So they both say no? Seems unlikely.

    • rml

no, you could find MLB’s in the 2nd round and who have not had season ending surgery

      • PetEng

You can find them undrafted too, what’s your point?

        • rml

My point is it would be a horrible move to use a 1st round pick on a linebacker coming off major surgery. Is that clear enough?

          • PetEng

What major surgery did Borland receive? I don’t recall it being advertised as serious.

        • rml

          Are you a 49er fan?

  • DLane

    Football = Troll

  • strabene

Usama Young is better than Charles Woodson???

    • eYeDEF

Did you know Woodson has been in the league since Clinton was president?

  • Raider MENDOZA

Who ever wrote this must be a foolish idiot clown..

    • PatriotsFan85

      3-13 STFU
You are disgrace to the N.F.L.

      • Rico Stifler

Hilarious coming from a fan of a team of cheating puzzies….

        • Patriotsfan85

LOL. Jealous women, kiss the rings bitch. Your team didn’t the win the super bowl pussy

          • Rico Stifler

Your team didn’t “win” anything either.

          • Patriotsfan85

Yeah, the patriots did win bitch oblivious you making bitch ass excuses for the Seattle-seahawks. Stop hating cause you bum ass team can’t win a super. KISS THE RINGS!.

  • brokemack

perfectly average on paper. Like the new coaching staff. After free agency & the draft Oakland will be a 2015 sleeper. McKenzie will get his cred in due time.

    • ReaL Raiders Fan0-16

I agree they will improve to 4-12 substantially improve for raiders standards
