2013 Pre-Season Punter Rankings

chris-kluwe-profileIn last season’s preseason punter rankings, we got to analyze the drama surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars’ selection of punter Bryan Anger in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Anger made good on his enormous promise, emerging as one of the league’s better punters as a rookie, but it’s hard to support the pick when the QB-needy Jags left Russell Wilson on the board. This season, there was no such draft-day drama.

The first punter off the board, UCLA’s Jeff Locke, joined a Minnesota Vikings team that made three first round picks in the same draft — Sharrif Floyd, Xavier Rhodes and Cordarelle Patterson. Also in the fifth round, the Lions selected Sam Martin out of Appalachian State. Locke will be the starter for the Vikings, replacing Chris Kluwe, while Martin is the frontrunner in a battle with Blake Clingan for the starting job.
