| AFC Squad (* = Starters) | ||||
| Position | Our Choices | Other guys we feel good about | High up in the fan vote but why? | Comments |
| Wide Receivers | Brandon
Lloyd (Den)* Andre Johnson (Hou)* Mike Wallace (Pit) |
Dwayne
Bowe (KC) Reggie Wayne (Ind) Anquan Boldin (Bal) |
Terrell Owens (Cin) | The starters are locks but then you can pick any from the next four. Malcom Floyd (SD), Wes Welker (NE), Devone Bess (Mia) & Deion Branch (NE) are also super but didn't have the raw numbers. Owens had decent base numbers but also 54.5% rec./target, 8 drops and 10 interceptions on balls thrown at him. |
| Tackles | LT - Jake Long (Mia)* RT - Damien Woody (NYJ)* Andrew Whitworth (Cin) |
D'Brickashaw Ferguson (NYJ) Ryan Clady (Den) Joe Thomas (Cle) Marshal Yanda (Bal) |
Michael Oher (Bal) Flozell Adams (Pit) |
Oher is a beneficiary of hype and has struggled on the left side just as he did last year. Adams is just a prank, right? 4 sacks, 3 hits and 25 hurries say so. |
| Guards | LG - Kris Dielman (SD)* RG - Ryan Lilja (KC)* Ben Grubbs (Bal) |
Mike Brisiel (Hou) Wade Smith (Hou) |
Eric Steinbach (Cle) Chris Kemoeatu (Pit) Trai Essex (Pit) |
Logan Mankins (NE) would have been on our list if he'd played a full season. Some fanboy, who obviously doesn't understand the concept of the Pro Bowl being for the best players, had somehow organized for a guy with 319 snaps and 6 starts (Trai Essex) to get over 96,000 votes. If this isn't reason enough in itself to stop fan voting, I don't know what is. |
| Centers | Nick Mangold (NYJ)* Matt Birk (Bal) |
Jeff Saturday (Ind) Brad Meester (Jac) Chris Myers (Hou) |
Maurkice Pouncey (Pit) | I've always found Steeler fans to be among the most Knowledgable around so what possessed them to vote for almost every man on probably the 2nd worst offensive line in the NFL. You'll find as many Bears fans voting for theirs as you will turkeys for Christmas. |
| Tight Ends | Marcedes Lewis (Jac)* Zac Miller (Oak) Antonio Gates (SD) |
Tony Moeaki (KC) Anthony Fasano (Mia) Rob Gronkowski (NE) |
Dustin Keller (NYJ) | Lewis has come on strong recently and Gates is so much better than anyone else as a reciever even we'll forget the blocking bit. As for Keller, if you want us to give you a mulligan on the blocking you need to do better than catch only 56% of balls thrown at you. |
| Quarterbacks | Philip Rivers (SD)* Tom Brady (NE) Peyton Manning (Ind) |
Matt Schaub (Hou) | Ryan Fitzpatrick (Buf) | Manning or Schaub? It came down to the fact we think without Manning these Colts are lucky to win two games. The Buffalo fans who voted for Fitzpatrick are all denying it now. |
| Halfbacks | Maurice Jones-Drew (Jac)* Jamaal Charles (KC) Arian Foster (Hou) |
Peyton Hillis (Cle) | LaDainian Tomlinson (NYJ) | Selecting 3 from those top four is difficult. Fitting in Tomlinson with just over 800 yards would be impossible for all but the Fireman. |
| Fullbacks | Greg Jones (Jac)* Vonta Leach (Hou) |
Mike Tolbert (SD) | In a poor year for fullbacks, Jones was the best by some margin. Tolbert has been a decent halfback for the Chargers, but has only played 15 snaps at FB.
| Defensive Ends | Terrell Suggs (Bal)* Jason Babin (Ten)* Shaun Ellis (NYJ) |
Mario Williams (Hou) Dwight Freeney (Ind) |
Brett Keisel (Pit) | NFL teams determine if a player is a DE or and LB by the number of times they drop in coverage on passing plays. At 13% we're calling Suggs a DE. Unlike the other Steeler vote-getters Keisel has played OK (if not great) but at 320 snaps compared to 852, 549 and 581 he wouldn't get in anyway. |
| Defensive Tackles | Kyle Williams (Buf)* Antonio Garay (SD)* Haloti Ngata (Bal) |
Jason Jones (Ten) Sione Pouha (NYJ) Richard Seymour (Oak) |
After playing the snap card against Keisel you may find it hypocritical to go with Garay. The difference? Well for one he's worth the spot and secondly it's not his fault it took the Chargers so long to realise he was their best pass rusher on the DL.
| Outside Linebackers | Tamba Hali (KC)* Cameron Wake (Mia)* James Harrison (Pit) |
Lamarr Woodley (Pit) Kamerion Wimbley (Oak) |
Hali is a one-dimensional rusher but what a rusher; 13 sacks, 12 hits and 49 hurries. Harrison got the last spot pver his teamate on the basis he's played the run much better this year.
| Inside Linebackers | Bart Scott (NYJ)* Lawrence Timmons (Pit)* James Farrior (Pit) |
Derrick Johnson (KC) Brandon Spikes (NE) Chris Gocong (Cle) |
Want to see how to blow up a running play? Just watch Scott attack the hole on almost every snap. He doesn't get all the tackles but must lead the league in fullback headaches.
| Cornerbacks | Champ Bailey (Den)* Brandon Flowers (KC)* Devin McCourty (NE) |
Nnamdi Asomugha (Oak) Joe Haden (Cle) Antoine Cason (SD) |
The unspoken name is Darelle Revis (NYJ). He'll get in because he's got the reputation, and he's done OK, but he's not close to his 2009 pace. He's given up yards and TDs and would have more against him but for drops and penalties. All our top three choices have done everything well; coverage and run support. Haden may be even better than McCourty in the long run but was only promoted to starter recently.
| Safeties | SS - Troy Polamalu (Pit) FS - Eric Weddle (SD) Michael Huff (Oak) |
Dawan Landry (Bal) | Brandon Meriweather (NE) Patrick Chung (NE) |
It's a measure of just how good Polamalu is that he can have two back to back clunkers mid-year and still make it. It's a measure of Meriweather's limitation that he's consistantly rotated in and out of the Patriots secondary with, of all people, Patrick Chung. |
| Kicker | Rob Bironas (Ten) | |||
| Punter | Shane Lechler (Oak) | Brandon Fields (Mia) | Pat McAfee (Ind) | |
| Kick Returner | Marc Mariani (Ten) | Javier Arenas (KC) | Josh Cribbs (Cle) Jacoby Ford (Oak) |
|
| Special Teamer | T.J. Ward (Cle) | |||
