Denver Broncos

Re-Focused – Steelers @ Broncos, Wild Card Round

Pittsburgh traveled to Denver to take on the Broncos sporting a record that was four wins better than their adversaries over the regular season. It stood to reason that the Steelers were expected to walk away from this game the victors after proving to the league why Tim Tebow can’t get it done on the big stage. As usual, it just didn’t work out like that.

The Pittsburgh offense was able to overcome injuries (and a clearly restricted Ben Roethlisberger) to score 23 points and move the ball pretty well, but for once they were let down by their defense–a D that sold out against the run more than we can ever remember seeing a team do before, daring Tim Tebow to beat them deep. Unfortunately for them, he obliged, and ultimately it cost them the win with one play in overtime that encapsulated the encounter.

Tebow was able to hit the deep passes against man coverage all night and the Steelers never backed off their aggressive game plan. As a result, Denver now moves on to play the New England Patriots, while the Pittsburgh Steelers move on home.

Three to Focus on: Steelers @ Broncos, Wild Card Round

Pittsburgh may have won 12 games, but they did not take the AFC North and, as such, they travel to the heights of Mile High where they face the AFC West winners, the 8-8 Denver Broncos. The home field advantage at Mile High is a significant one, claiming its first victim even before the teams have arrived to play. Steelers’ safety Ryan Clark has been told by his head coach that he will not be playing in this game, after the last trip to Denver caused him to have a nasty medical reaction to the rarified air that resulted in a hospital stint and a serious risk to his health.

Pittsburgh is reeling from several injuries in recent weeks that have robbed them of some of their better players, and they have struggled in their past few games because of this. They may be, in theory, the much better side, but they showed last week against Cleveland that they are unlikely to blow anybody away, let alone a playoff team.

The Steelers are four wins better than the Broncos this season, but this is the playoffs where anything can happen, and if there is any time for Tim Tebow to prove that he really does just get the job done, this would be a pretty good stage to prove it on. Read the rest of this entry »

Re-Focused: Chiefs @ Broncos, Week 17

In a game the Broncos had a win and in situation, their offense didn’t seem to get the message. Neither team was able to do much when they had the ball in their hands, but Kansas City was able to get the ball into the end zone once, which was good enough for the win.

In the fourth quarter, we’ve grown to expect Tim Tebow to come up with some sort of heroics to make the game winning score and clinch the division. In this game there were no signs of Tebow making big plays at any point, so when it came to the fourth quarter Denver didn’t look like they had much of a chance despite only being down by four.

Even though Denver couldn’t score more than three points, they can thank the Chargers for helping them make the playoffs. Only parts of this team look playoff ready, while the rest of the team needs to get better fast if they want a chance against Pittsburgh.

Three to Focus on: Chiefs @ Broncos, Week 17

While the 2010 AFC West division champion Chiefs won’t be repeating the feat this year, they are in a position to help determine who will represent the division in the postseason. The Raiders, who eliminated Kansas City last week, must now rely on the Chiefs doing them a favor by beating Denver. No one will be more motivated to keep the Broncos out of the postseason than Kyle Orton, who never had the full support of the Broncos fan base from the moment he was thrown into the Jay Cutler trade.

The last time these teams met, in Week 10, was the game in which Tim Tebow threw eight passes and completed only two. The Broncos ran the ball 55 times with no pretense of a passing game and still racked up 244 yards, which along with a 56-yard touchdown to Eric Decker (-5.4) was just enough to get a win. Denver has tried to balance the offense more in recent weeks but haven’t had great results, so they might try to get back to what they do best against a team they had no problem running on before. Since the Chiefs have already experienced the Broncos’ read option attack, though, I’d expect Denver to favor a more traditional approach running the ball with some option plays mixed in.

Re-Focused: Broncos @ Bills, Week 16

It’s becoming almost a cliché in the NFL these days; at season’s end a team with nothing to play for coming out and handing a spanking to a team with playoff aspirations. Perhaps in this case “spanking” is more hyperbole than anything else because it wasn’t until there was 8:03 left in the final quarter that Buffalo pulled two scores in front and even by games end Denver had still scored more offensive touchdowns than the Bills.

The naysayers may have waited a long time to look right about Tim Tebow, but eventually here he was; looking out of his depth and throwing some horrible stuff in a desperate attempt to bring his team from a long way back. That said how many quarterbacks have never been in the position of seeing a comeback attempt fall on stony ground? He’ll have next week to find the magic again and if he does then the show starts all over again.

Three to Focus on: Broncos @ Bills, Week 16

Earlier in the season, this game would have had a much different feel. The Bills were the team with playoff aspirations while Denver was closer to contending for worst team in the league honors. Since Week 8, they’ve gone in opposite directions. The Broncos have lost only to the Patriots since being blown out by Detroit that week and are 5-0 on the road with Tim Tebow starting. The Bills blanked the Redskins that week to move their record to 5-2, but seven consecutive losses have removed Buffalo from playoff contention. Every Buffalo opponent has scored at least 23 points during the streak while the reeling Bills have reached that plateau only twice.

So while Denver looks like the superior team, it’s worth remembering that the Bills would have been picked to win this game only a few months ago. The NFL is constantly evolving and just as Week 8 was a turning point for both of these teams, perhaps this game could be as well. While Buffalo has to be disappointed to miss the postseason after such a hot start, it’s important, for the sake of momentum, that they don’t go into 2012 with a nine-game losing streak.

Re-Focused: Patriots @ Broncos, Week 15

Two of the league’s hottest teams squared off Sunday amidst a number of intriguing storylines. The New England Patriots came in riding a five game winning streak, one win away from clinching the AFC East. The Denver Broncos had won six straight themselves, mostly in Disney-movie style, to jump top of the AFC West at 8-5. The game went against the fairy-tale script early as the Broncos pulled ahead 16-7 after dominating the early action behind 167 yards on the ground in the first quarter. Denver started to get careless with the ball though, as they lost three fumbles on the day, and the Patriots offense methodically took control of the game and scored the next 27 points to go up 34-16.

Of course the Broncos called upon some of their fourth quarter magic, but after they cut the deficit to 11, the Patriots did what the past six teams couldn’t, and shut the door with a nine play, 80 yard touchdown drive to seal the game at 41-23. The turnovers were too much to overcome, while the Patriots offense has too many weapons to defend, but the Broncos benefitted from an Oakland Raiders loss and still control their own destiny in the West. The Patriots took a huge step forward this weekend as they now sit alone atop the entire AFC and are staring a first round bye and No. 1 seed right in the face.

Three to Focus On: Patriots @ Broncos, Week 15

When the Broncos opened 1-4, who would have thought they would be only two games behind New England when they host the 10-3 Patriots this week? With the Broncos riding a six-game winning streak and the Patriots winners of five straight, something has to give here. History indicates Tom Brady (+35.7) will be challenged for his 11th victory. He’s 1-6 in his career against the Broncos, including a 20-17 overtime loss to Josh McDaniels and the Broncos in 2009.

The Patriots match up well with the Broncos. Their biggest flaw this season has been their inability to defend the pass—you know it’s bad when Julian Edelman is playing snaps on defense—averaging over 300 passing yards allowed per game. Of course, the Broncos don’t have the most developed passing game in the league, so their biggest weakness will be tough to expose for Denver. The Patriots’ defense is misleadingly efficient at keeping teams out of the end zone despite giving up over 400 yards per game, so Denver needs to capitalize on whatever opportunities they earn. Re-Focused: Bears @ Broncos, Week 14

The world gasped once again as Tim Tebow led another late, game-winning drive over the shocked Chicago Bears, leaving them in sole possession of first place in the AFC West at 8-5. The Bears, despite not having star players Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, led 10-0 with a little over two minutes left in regulation but could not hang on, falling to 7-6 with their postseason hopes very much in doubt.

Caleb Hanie is no Jay Cutler, but he didn’t turn the ball over, helping his defense to keep Tebow and Denver’s strong running game in check. Marion Barber aided his team with over 100 yards rushing against a recently-revitalized defense, but his turnover in OT proved costly. Tebow had his own ball-security problems with his first multi-turnover game of the season, but without a running game he had to make plays with his arm, and he did. Take a look at some performances that shaped this overtime contest that turned into a thriller late and sends both teams in different directions going forward.

Three to Focus on: Bears @ Broncos, Week 14

As the Bears attempt to stay afloat in the NFC Wild Card race, they could learn a thing or two from their opponents here. The Broncos have set the bar for winning with an inexperienced young quarterback and they’ve done it in a way that’s not impossible for the Bears to emulate. The read-option attack notwithstanding, the Broncos run the ball well, play good defense, and protect the ball very well. Chicago is more than capable of the first two but Caleb Hanie (-4.9) has thrown six interceptions while completing less than half his passes since taking over at quarterback for Jay Cutler. The Bears’ recent AFC West tour has been a disaster. Now without the NFL’s leader in yards from scrimmage—Matt Forte (+17.8) could miss up to a month with a MCL sprain—Hanie will need to keep the ball out of the defense’s hands to have any chance.
