Analysis Notebook: Week 14

The Analysis Notebook returns for a Week 14 edition, highlighting of more plays found noteworthy by the PFF analysis team.

This time Sam Monson and Ben Stockwell are joined by a play suggestion from Khaled Elsayed. The PFF trio have brought to the table a touchdown relying on some clever scheming, a touchdown relying on pure speed and athleticism, and one truly dominant display from a defensive lineman that completely torpedoes a short-yardage run.

So swim along as we dive deeper into this week’s select plays–one week closer to the end of the NFL regular season and the start of playoff football.

Analysis Notebook: Week 13

Week 13 brought its fair share of interesting plays to the table, including one that required a half-hour round table discussion between PFF Analysts just to try and work out exactly what one player thought he was playing at on a given play.

Sam Monson and Ben Stockwell return for another week of plays that deserve to be highlighted for one reason or another. We’re going to take a look at an all-too-rare sight this season for Chargers fans, an impressive run play, and a momentum-swinging pick-six.

So take a seat and enjoy the breakdowns.

Analysis Notebook: Week 11

Week 11 is in the books and as Thanksgiving rolls around we have just enough time for a quick look back before we’re straight into Week 12 action.

Once again, our two expert analysts Sam Monson and Ben Stockwell are in attendance, and once again they have a selection of three of the more interesting plays they came across this week.

Among them we’ll see a quarterback sneak (of all things), a wide receiver option pass, and a quick pass to a receiver crossing the formation against what looked to be a blown coverage by the defense. Only one of these plays went for a touchdown, and it was the shortest gain of them all. Read the rest of this entry »

Analysis Notebook: Week 10

Just when you think you’ve seen everything in the NFL, you get a week like we just had. Whatever you think about Tim Tebow as an NFL quarterback / media circus, you can’t deny it’s great to watch the Broncos break out a college offense for him to run against the Chiefs.

In this week’s Analysis Notebook our top analysts, Ben Stockwell and Sam Monson, cast their eye over some suicidal blitz calling, a carbon copy of a play previously featured on the Notebook, and exactly what the Broncos are doing to make Tebow work.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the Xs and Os from another week of NFL action.

Analysis Notebook: Week 9

Another week down, and another week of some interesting quirks found by our pair of analysts. Sam Monson and Ben Stockwell are back casting their eye over some interesting plays from week nine’s games.

Though there were plenty of highlight reel plays from this week’s games we’ve chosen a selection of plays that might not leap to the forefront of your mind when choosing which to analyze. That’s just the kind of guys we are.

This week we’re going to depart from the usual tack of analyzing some of the headline grabbing touchdown passes and look at a few plays much more under the radar. That means turning our attention to a pair of plays where the defenses came out on top, and one where a defense’s over aggressiveness led to them giving up an easy first down conversion.

Analysis Notebook: Week 8

With plenty of worthy Week 8 plays to choose from, PFF Analysts Sam Monson and Ben Stockwell select three that stood out to them during their weekly tape review work.

Watching every play of every game so closely, it’s understandable that the little things that set certain plays apart bring smiles to their faces. That idea holds true again as a couple of clever designs – one on an interior blitz, the other an ill-gotten but entertaining pass completion – are joined by a perfectly-executed run in this week’s Notebook.
