New York Jets: Sanchize or Tebow-Time?

The Jets’ 2011 season ran right off the rails and Mark Sanchez was in the wheelhouse pushing the buttons.

They flirted with the acquisition of Peyton Manning this offseason and, when that failed, re-worked Sanchez’ contract to make it look like a “financial apology.” In reality, it made it far easier for them to say goodbye to him down the road. Now they have blown a quiet Wednesday out of the water with a trade for Tim Tebow, the enigmatic quarterback deemed surplus to the requirements by the Broncos after the signing of  Manning.

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that Rex Ryan’s Jets are always interesting.

DeMeco Ryans: Everyone’s a winner!

When it was announced that the Houston Texans had traded DeMeco Ryans for a fourth round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles, some were shocked, some were even angered.

Me? I was impressed.

Impressed that the Texans were able to turn a cap hit into a draft pick. Impressed that the Eagles were able to acquire a middle linebacker that they needed without paying inflated free agent prices. Impressed that Ryans would now have a role able to fully utilze his skill-set.

Yes, to me, this was one of those rare trades where everyone wins.  Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Moore: Worth Sticking With

I’m not afraid to admit when I’m wrong, and when it comes to Matt Moore, I was wrong.

Back after the 2009 season I saw many a storied media pundit predict big things for the Carolina QB. Charting his ‘hot’ finish to the year, he was the guy that was going to lead the Panthers to big things … only, it didn’t quite work out like that.

Completing just 55.2% of passes and earning a -10.6 grade, Moore was benched as the starter for Carolina as he did his part in leading them to the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft. He stunk, and as someone who saw it coming I was pretty damn smug.

Then he fell into the starting line-up for Miami and, by the end of the year, I wasn’t quite so smug. Now my transformation from hater to lover is complete because I can’t quite believe the Dolphins think that Alex Smith represents an upgrade.

Free Agency Day 5: 5 Questions, 5 Analysts (03/18/12)

After something of a busy Saturday night where the spirit of St. Patrick saw NFL owners loosen the purse strings, you get the feeling free agency has hit its stride.

After looking at activity on a day-by-day basis, we’re going to get a bit more evaluative and look at the entire period to see what moves and teams have made the biggest impression on us. So, once again, Ben Stockwell, Khaled Elsayed, Neil Hornsby, Nathan Jahnke and Sam Monson were forced to sit down together and talk. Like they’re not sick of the sound of each others’ voices already.

It’s Five Questions, Five Answers.

Observations from Week 1 of Free Agency

Some teams really don’t get how free agency works. In theory, free agency can be an invaluable opportunity to improve your roster with a careful selection of the right players at the right price in March.

Unfortunately, it can also be the perfect way to cripple your franchise by throwing wasted money at players that will never justify the contract.

Teams always like to try and build through the draft (with a couple of notable exceptions), but the real differentiator in the NFL is how badly teams can manage to screw up in free agency.

With that in mind, here are some thoughts from this first week of the madness.

Free Agency Day 4: 5 Questions, 5 Analysts (03/17/12)

Day four of free agency is in the bag and what a day it was. A new suitor for Peyton Manning was introduced to us. The center market was set. And deals were made and visits were undertaken.

Our analysts had a lot of fun breaking down the days events on the blog and twitter, and now we’ve put them on the spot to get their thoughts on the best and worst of the day. What moves did they like? What moves did they hate? What would they do if they were one of the players?

Let’s find out.
